About Shawn
Background & approach
Dr. Handeland graduated in 2012 from Northwestern Health Sciences University and is a second-generation chiropractor. He began his career practicing alongside his father in Emmetsburg, Iowa, later expanding to Laurens — building two clinics and more than a decade of hands-on experience across Northwest Iowa before bringing his practice to Carlisle.
His care centers on one goal: helping patients avoid surgery whenever possible. Using detailed X-ray analysis, specific chiropractic adjustments, and non-surgical spinal decompression, Dr. Handeland works to correct the root of the problem rather than just chase symptoms. As a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP), he also brings advanced training in the care of active and athletic patients.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Handeland stays active with regular workouts and time with his wife, Jo, and their three kids — Ben, Anders, and Ada — plus three dogs who keep the family busy. He is excited to put down roots in Carlisle and get involved in the community.
